Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Silver Dollar Commemorative

If you are looking to get these coins for yourself, as a gift for the oldest Marine, as a gift for the youngest Marine, or as an investment - now is the time to act!  These coins will increase in value!  We do not sell any of the Marine Corps Commemorative Coins on this site - see EBAY or your local coin dealer.

For 230 years, the men and women of the United States Marine Corps have stood for those who could not stand. They have fought and died to protect the freedoms we all enjoy. Imbued with courage and resolve, a Marine can be counted on to bear any burden, at home or abroad, in defense of liberty.   This year, 2005, the US mint chose to honor our Marines with a Silver Dollar Commemorative celebrating the 230th Anniversary of the Corp.

The US Mint was authorized by Congress to produce 500,000 of these coins.  In an unprecedented move, the Director of the US Mint elected to take the option of authorizing an additional 100,000 of these coins to be produced and sold.  The 600,000 coins were produced as Proof Commemoratives and Uncirculated Commemoratives and sold as four different product options:

Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Proof Silver Dollar (5C1) - (more information) - about 400,000 were made - 350,000 sold, packaged in a premium gift box, and 50,000 included in the 2005 American Legacy Collection.  All of the Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Proof Silver Dollars sold out within about 60 days.  By the end of 2005 these Proof Coins will be selling for at least double their issue price of $39.  Many experts feel that this Proof Coin will outperform any Modern Commemorative that has been issued.

Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Uncirculated Silver Dollar (5C2) - (more information) - about 200,000 were made - 150,000 sold, packaged in a gift box, and 50,000 included in the 2005 Marine Corps Coin & Stamp Set. All of the Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Uncirculated Silver Dollars sold out within about 60 days.  Although, initially the Uncirculated coin may not keep up with sales of the Proof Coin, in the long run, this coin may well be more valuable than the Proof Coin because there are only 150,000 out there.

2005 United States Mint American Legacy Collection™ (5J3) - (more information) - only 50,000 were made and sold - they sold out in about 60 days.

Marine Corps Coin & Stamp Set (5C3) - (more information) - only 50,000 were made and sold - they sold out in about two weeks.

Supply and Demand:

The supply of these outstanding coins, honoring the service of the millions of Marines who are serving and have served in the Corp, will definitely not meet the demand for these coins.

The US Mint will sell only a total of 600,000 of these coins between the Proof Coin and the Uncirculated Coin.  Early estimates indicate that a little over 400,000 proof coins (this includes the 50,000 included in the American Legacy Collection) and a little under 200,000 uncirculated coins (this includes the 50,000 included in the Stamp and Coin) be shipped.

The demand for the Marine Corps Coin has been exceptionally strong.  In addition to coin collectors, we have about 174,000 Marines presently serving in the active and reserve forces, and I estimate that, out of our 26 million veterans, we have about 3 million Marines.

An Additional Thought:

The US Mint is donating ten dollars from the sale of each of the Marine Corps coins to the Marine Heritage Foundation.  The Foundation will get 6 million dollars.  I am sure that the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard organizations are looking into getting their coin.

If Congress decided to create a series of Armed Forces Commemoratives, these Marine Corps coins will definitely  go the route of the 1999 Silver 50 State Coin Set that is now selling for over ten times the purchase price.  Coin collectors from around the world will want to build a set and the key to that set will be one of these  350,000 Marine Corps proof coins and the 50,000 Marine Corps proof coins that are contained in the 2005 American Legacy Collection.

Bottom Line:

If you are looking to get these coins for yourself, as a gift for the oldest Marine, as a gift for the youngest Marine, or as an investment - now is the time to act!  These coins will increase in value!

Marine Corps Coin & Stamp Set (5C3)

For 230 years, the men and women of the United States Marine Corps have stood for those who could not stand. They have fought and died to protect the freedoms we all enjoy. Imbued with courage and resolve, a Marine can be counted on to bear any burden, at home or abroad, in defense of liberty.

Included in this handsome limited-edition set are a satin finish uncirculated Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Silver Dollar and an original 3-cent Iwo Jima postage stamp, issued by the then United States Post Office Department in 1945. Both the obverse of the coin and the stamp carry a rendition of the flag raising image as seen through the lens of Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal atop Mount Suribachi on the Japanese Island of Iwo Jima, February 23, 1945. It is believed to be the most reproduced image in the history of photography.

The coin's reverse features an engraving of the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, official emblem of the United States Marine Corps. Today's emblem has remained virtually unchanged since 1868, when United States Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles approved the design as recommended by Brigadier General Commandant Jacob Zeilin.

The United States Mint is proud to offer this limited-edition coin and stamp set to pay tribute to the remarkable history of the United States Marine Corps.

No more than 50,000 of these sets will be sold.

2005 United States Mint American Legacy Collection™ (5J3)

New for 2005, this remarkable collection of proof condition coins is reminiscent of the United States Mint's Prestige Set, issued in years past. In addition to proof versions of all United States Mint 2005-dated circulating coinage, this set also includes proof versions of both the Chief Justice John Marshall Silver Dollar and the Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Silver Dollar. Presented in unique and elegant packaging. This new, exclusive collection has a strict limit of no more than 50,000 sets.

Each set contains 11 newly minted proof condition coins, seven of them struck in brilliant silver. This set contains the Lincoln cent, the Golden Dollar featuring Sacagawea and includes two new coins from the Westward Journey Nickel Series™. The Roosevelt dime, Kennedy half-dollar and all five of the quarter-dollars minted for the 50 State Quarters® Program in 2005 have been struck in 90% silver, or coin silver. The luster and value of silver makes this set a perfect gift and a great addition to any collection.

Proof coins have a brilliant mirror-like finish. The term "proof" refers to a specialized minting process, which begins by manually feeding burnished coin planchets into presses fitted with specially polished dies. Each coin is struck multiple times so the softly frosted, yet detailed, images seem to float above a mirror-like field. This set includes a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Director of the United States Mint.
